Best apps to memorize lines, compared
The iPhone apps actors use to learn lines, grouped by how they work, with real App Store prices checked on 24 October 2026.
I make one of them, LineHarbor, and it is marked as mine. The others are described from their own App Store pages, prices in US dollars.
Quick answer
- You want a reader for the other parts: a reader app such as coldRead, Linus, ScenePartner, ActOnCue or LineHarbor.
- You want your own voice, or a friend's, reading the cues: Run Lines With Me or LineLearner, where you record the scene.
- You are learning a monologue or a speech: a text memorizer like MemoCoach or Memorize By Heart.
- You want something free right now: the free line drill in your browser.

Reader apps
These read every other part so you can say yours. The difference is in the voices, the price and whether you need a connection.
coldRead
The best known reader app, with the most ratings. It runs lines by responding to your cues and works without an internet connection. Its last App Store update was in December 2022.
Linus and ScenePartner
Both use AI voices as a scene partner and lean toward self tapes. ScenePartner also lets you invite a friend to read. Both run on subscriptions, ScenePartner at the higher end.
ActOnCue
A reader for TV, film, theatre and commercials, with line learning and self tape recording, paid with credit packs.
LineHarbor (mine)
Import a script, even a scanned PDF, or paste a scene. LineHarbor finds the characters and cues, then reads every other part with the voices installed on your iPhone, including Apple's free Premium voices. Turn on listening and it waits until you have said your line. Loop a hard passage, hide your lines when you are ready. It works offline and your scripts stay on your phone. Free with the sample scene and one imported scene, LineHarbor Pro removes the limit.
Record your own scene
Run Lines With Me and LineLearner have you record the scene, your voice or a friend's, then play it back with gaps for your lines. Cheap and simple, and you hear real human voices, but you have to record every scene first.
Text memorizers
MemoCoach and Memorize By Heart are built for any text, not scenes. They hide words or use first letters until you know it by heart. Good for monologues, speeches and songs, less so for back and forth dialogue.
LineHarbor
A scene partner on your iPhone that waits for your cue. Free to start.
Questions
What is the best way to memorize lines, app or not?
Say them out loud against the cue, with less and less help each time. The method, step by step, is in how to memorize lines fast.
Which apps work offline?
coldRead says it needs no internet connection, and LineHarbor works offline. Apps that use cloud AI voices need a connection for those voices.
Is there a free line learning app?
Most of these are free to download with paid limits. The line drill on this site is free with no limit, text only.
